Creating Color

In this course I will explain color in simple terms, teaching you to understand and make your own assessments about what makes good color work together.

I use 3 different approaches to demonstrate and explain my ideas and philosophies about how size, shape and color are the root of all good paintings.
Starting with simple circles we will create our own color maps mixing from primary colors to create a full range or tones and color relationships.

Throughout the course I will create 3 paintings in distinct styles from start to finish.
First demo is abstract, no forms only shapes, size elements and color relationships. Next demo piece will blur  these ideas into an artwork that uses many of my ideas and techniques for creating forms and characters, and another demo that stays minimal focusing on composition, space, and shapes while keeping things simple and space open to really bring forward the idea of composition and minimalism.
Each demo painting focus on color but from separate focus and perspective. The more ways you have to look and something and learn about it the more you can truly understand it..

Sum of My Steps: Artist Talk

Bonus Artist talk, learn about my journey of becoming the artist I am today.  I normally give this talk at the beginning of all my workshops.  I recommend watching this video before starting the painting videos of the workshop if you haven't heard it before.
Part 1: How I Started Painting
Part 2: How I found meaning in my work
Part 3: Becoming a Full Time Artist
Part 4: Building my Career & Why I Started Teaching

Lesson 1

This lesson will lead you through color relationships, showing you the connection and opposition of hot and cold colors, as well as how contrast effects their interactions.

Using only circles to avoid form and other distractions to focus on just color. To find your particular likes within color relationships.

The main idea is to teach you about color, mixing, and that you are capable of mixing and creating great colors from scratch.  It also introduces the idea of variations, even with something as simple as a circle.

As variation is key to any great art. I go on to discuss all the relationships that present themselves thru painting size composition and depth and how color and contrast effect them.

The more opposite, the more activating the relationship.
The more similar, the less contrasting and activating the relationship.

Color Relationships

Lesson 2

In this lesson we will be finding tones that fit between what we have already created to get a fuller tonal range. Learning along the way how color pulls the eye and where the color pull creates the composition over the size elements or a foreground background mechanisms.

Lesson 3

Small elements create and change the scale of what is already present in your work. Lines can be used in many ways, one productive way is to draw connections between areas and elements within a given piece. Both of these techniques also can be used to create depth, test colors, test shapes, and create divisions within your work without any of the interactions becoming too dominant.

Grabbing is used to focus us in on an area we like, an area of variation we think will look good together. It separates the grabbed area from the rest of the painting. We paint around areas we like to reveal them and make them clear to see by painting out what is around them. The grab is fast and powerful as it recomposes the entire piece, creates a composition within the grab of colors, sizes elements and space, adjusts the palette by the use of a large amount of flat blocking color. Grabbing removes activity to make room for new activity, as well as creates shapes within the grabs.

The grab is one of the most powerful moves at the base of my techniques. Its a very backward move from what many people are used to, painting around a shape you want to create rather than painting in the shape. This is what gives the collage look. It allows you to capture expression you have already created by grabbing shapes and allowing things to be forced together. This tends to  encourage random and raw capture, oppose making a plan and executing a composition or form. In this case although the plan seems clear we are far more likely to end up with harder questions color choices, the question of is this right or worthy. In contrast to the grab where it seems as though things appear. It also keeps us focused on color, size elements, variation, contrast and base shapes rather than details that can convince us to overlook these more predominant elements of our work. The details are the least important bits, we want to give them the last of our attention. To keep our ideas movements and choices free and experimental.
Size elements, lines, and grabbing
Recap Lesson 3

Lesson 4

In this lesson we continue on the two pieces we have started. Integrating line with pastels to create further division and variation into our work. Learning to let collision recompose our pieces intern forcing us to reasses and change direction in our work. Learning to change direction is key to remaining expressed and experimental within our practice. We also learn ways to encourage finding form. Lastly we will grab finding new shapes in the process creating space within our work thru elimination. This also creates new composition and assessment of the new position we find ourselves in.

Collision, Recomposition, Finding Form, and Grabbing

Lesson 5

In this lesson we will change directions a bit and take a break from the other works we have started. This will clear our heads a bit from them as well as jolt a new idea about composition and shape play. We will start a new piece to explore minimal composition and shape plays.
Starting Fresh Minimalist Shape Composition

Lesson 6

We continue on our minimalist pieces adding some finer elements to create scale and minor plays within the piece. Detailing to bring out features and bring attention to areas of interest.
Adding Small Elements and Details

Lesson 7

In this lesson we Continue forward on all of our paintings. As much as we try we often find contrast isn't as strong as we would like or gets lost when focusing on hot and cold relationships. Its often the lightest colors that are missing. Most people stay in the middle alot. Another thing that often happens is the longer we work the more we are out to find our selves bored or stuck with what we have. So we look for new directions with grabs or creating new activity.
Contrast and Finding New Direction

Lesson 8

In this lesson we will explore shape and form. Building on grabs being sure to try more then one form. To expect to get it right on the first try is ridiculous. So instead we go over and try out multiple ideas even when we think the first attempt satisfies us..
Exploring Shape and Form

Lesson 9

In this lesson we dial in on our primary form. Then, we add new possible focus to antagonize a new idea as well as test the old. Its important to make your next move a choice rather than something you did and accepted. We also play with color and secondary elements to push the work forward into new levels and balances to look for new possabilities.

Antagonizing New Direction and Possability

Lesson 10

In this lesson we work on finding abstract shapes. We use a variety of concepts to guide us, following shapes and colors that are already present. Using color plays to bring areas into focus. Then we rebuild to stimulate new shape ideas.
Finding Abstract Shapes and Rebuilding

Lesson 11

In this lesson we refine our abstract color pieces, focusing on getting the colors perfect to get the piece to really pop. Using contrasting tones and opposing colors we define specific areas allowing them to show themselves in there best company. Its all about making the colors work together as well as you can. Letting the color pull your eye thru the composition so the viewer looks where you want them to.
Finding the perfect colors

Lesson 12

In this lesson we work on our figure and form paintings and use color to guide the viewer towards whats important. Using contrast to activate areas and enhance color composition. In this way we take the viewer through the painting from most important elements to least. Size elements and contrast hits guide the eye in even small ways to activate areas and give them that little extra attention.

Using color to guide the viewer

Lesson 13

In this lesson we will work around our abstract piece and look for ways to bring out form. Defining areas that present form using line contrast and the addition of small fractures of form to reveal the suggestion of a bigger form. Its not necessary but often creates a lot of interest when the view has fragments of an image to play with within the abstraction...
Revealing Abstract Form with Definition and Contrast

Lesson 14

In this lesson we will work on our figurative color piece making adjustments to focus our viewer into the areas of our piece that are most important. Using color and contrast to create little pops in our painting that grab our attention and force us to focus on these areas.

Emphasizing Composition with Color Plays
Lesson 14 recap

Lesson 15

In this lesson we use color and contrast to clarify our abstract form. This brings clarity to shape by eliminating similar colors and contrast levels.
Clarifying Form with Color

Lesson 16

In this lesson we bring the form even more into focus using color and contrast. we then add subtle contrast elements to create plays that add interest but dont create confusion to the form
